Default What will become of Cognos

All,

I'm wondering how IBM will integrate Cognos into its product suite. They have had previous acquisitions that have been gobbled up and never heard of again. Take Alphablox or Data Quant as examples. Has anyone heard of these products since their takeover ? Do they still exist or have they been rebranded.

Surely the strength of the Cognos brand should keep it in the market as a BI product for some time to come. On a similar note, one would expect SAP to continue with the Business Objects brand as well. Are there any other examples of takeovers and intergration of products into existing products ?

Other thoughts that this very exciting BI news raises is:

Does Cognos make IBM complete ? Can it be now called a complete BI vendor ?
Which is the strongest joined entity ? SAP/Business Objects or IBM/Cognos or even Oracle/Hyperion ? Do any of them stand out as the vendor of choice to the BI community? Who will end up the largest combined vendor ?

What do others think ?

I think it is a pity IBM taking over Cognos.... this is because Cognos was platform independent using Oracle or DB2 or Sql Server as a database source and runs on AIX or windows platforms, now I think it will be optimized to run on IBM servers and Software. Maybe I am too cynical when IBM took over lotus notes they kept it as a separate entity and it seems to have worked ok.

On the upside IBM has a huge customer base which means cognos will get a lot more customers.

I honestly thought cognos was the best BI tool available... I dont like hyperion user interface and I think the business objects development is too clunky

But then again if I was a database vendor, I would be buying a decent BI tool as well.
