January is now behind us and I'd like to think that the summer holidays are all behind us (read: all our New Year resolutions are broken and we can get back to behaving normally).
So now's the time to take stock of the state of the local Analytic market. There is a palpable climate of fear out in the job market, but I still believe that the demand for good BI and Analytics people goes on. Am I deluding myself? Well, we're analysts right?! So what is the evidence?
First: I came across an interesting table of redundancies on ZDnet Australia's site. The whole article is here. It reports the following ICT redundancies:

BI Skill Shortage?
Just published in today's Australian IT. Maybe there's hope for us all?!
Quote:BI skills shortage persists
Jennifer Foreshew | February 24, 2009
THE slowdown in the economy may have eased IT skills shortages across the country, but a continuing shortage of business intelligence specialists could result in flawed projects, says analyst Gartner.
Speaking ahead of Gartner's BI and Information Management Summit starting in Sydney today, Ian Bertram said the promised outcomes of BI could be limited by skills shortages.
"There are some skills out there that people require in these roles and they are not just technical skills," said Mr Bertram, who is Gartner's global BI research team manager and chair of the summit.
"Those business and management skills are driving these projects internally."
"Globally there has been a very high demand for BI skills and there are not enough people with them," he said.
The BI concept was to use information to make better decisions in an organisation. It could be applied to business activity monitoring, fraud detection and procurement processes.
"If BI is managed correctly - if you have a process to manage it, govern it and get rid of crap in the organisation - it is more likely to be successful."
Andrew Cross, managing director of recruitment company Ambition Technology, said: "There will be continued demand for business intelligence professionals, particularly people who can identify how to streamline a business and get more productivity or profitability from resources."
Despite the downturn, Taylor Coulter director Trevor Taylor said, there would be increased investment in information management tools and systems.Posted 24th February 2009 at 09:47 PM by JohnG
