Lightbulb CSC Report: Mind the Gap

Mind the Gap: Australia's Knowledge Capital Shortcomings

Published in June 2009, this is a major study of the Australian knowledge economy. Attached is the full report and here is the description from CSC's website:

Quote:
Knowledge capital assets are central to delivering a sustained competitive advantage and ensuring organisational success, however less than one third of Australians organisations are achieving significant performance increases as a result of their knowledge capital. To find out the key drivers that unlock organisational performance from knowledge capital, Download now

The Australian economy has thrived on primary industry, but the future will require a heavier reliance on intellectual assets. Better management of knowledge capital at an organisational level must start now.

Knowledge capital needs to be on the business agenda - even more so when economic times are tough because it protects in times of crisis and offers a competitive advantage not only to individual organisations but also to our national economy.

CSC research has revealed that while Australian businesses recognise knowledge capital management as a key driver of operational efficiency and business performance, most Australian organisations direct insufficient attention to it and it remains predominantly unmeasured, unmanaged and underfunded within organisations. Australian organisations are sabotaging their performance. There is a significant disconnect between vision and results - Australia's Knowledge Capital Gap.

According to Dr. Christina Boedker, CEO, Society for Knowledge Economics, "Knowledge Capital is undoubtedly the key value driver of firm performance and shareholder value in the 21st century. Countries such as Ireland, Finland, Canada, Denmark and the UK are seeking to maximise the value of firms' knowledge capital through industry collaboration and government programs which aim to create High Performing Workplaces. To remain competitive, Australia should consider similar initiatives."

"Ignoring knowledge capital assets is like keeping your company's cash reserves in a suitcase or leaving your office building unlocked on weekends. It is vital senior executives sit up and take notice," said Mr. Nick Wilkinson, President and CEO of CSC Australia.

CSC's report underscores the importance of knowledge capital and how, with proper investment and management, more Australian enterprises can reap the benefits.

The research identified a number of key knowledge capital and management trends which are reducing the effectiveness and competitiveness of Australian businesses. These trends are more evident as a consequence of the Global Financial Crisis (GFC).

CSC found that there were four distinct segments to describe organisations success at leveraging knowledge capital - the 'rear-guards', the 'late followers', the 'early followers' and the 'vanguards'. Only 17% of organisationa are Vanguards who are managing their knowledge capital well and clearly setting the benefits of doing so. You can benefit from their experience, download now to learn how.
