Facebook, LinkedIn, and Dunbar’s Number

I’ve finally given in and opened up a Facebook account. I’ve had a LinkedIn profile for a while now, and in the beginning I was sceptical of its utility. To tell the truth I still am, but I have been offered jobs and I have connected with people and introduced others where this might otherwise not have been possible. Having built a Facebook profile over the last week and played with it I can see some utility from a business sense. It has some advantages over LinkedIn, but neither allow me to map the networks in the way I want to, although it is easier to do in Facebook. There are a few plugins for both tools, but I have found them unsatisfactory.

I remain sceptical about the number of links people accumulate, with some having many hundreds and others having thousands - surely Dunbar’s number applies!
