In my last post on Actionable Information Management Principles: People, I presented my principles and actions related to people. Principle #6 Business Requirements Drive Information Management and Solution Design Business Driver Information Management is an important creator of value that must be understood and not treated as a 'black box' Actions Know the business question(s) that youre trying to answer Leverage what exists in your current information infrastructure and strengthen existing structures wherever possible Focus primarily on whats needed by the business Think about where the information is coming from, who owns it, and why they should give you the information needed Principle #7 Harnessing information and intelligence is a corporate priority Business Driver Information has not only an intrinsic value in and of itself, but also it is the key to increasing the value of all assets owned by the organisation Actions Design our core business processes to embed good information management practice and reduce duplication and re-work for our staff. Information management will be embedded into our business processes Principle #8 A common business and technical language is essential Business Driver Information costs money and a common language about it is needed in order to have effective storage, retrieval and sharing of information Actions Both unstructured and structured data must have a common definition throughout the Company to enable sharing of data - especially for performance management and consolidated reporting. A common vocabulary will facilitate communications, enable dialogue to be effective and facilitate interoperability of systems. Principle #9 Information management requires large step change and long haul commitment Business Driver Change is a feature of the business environment and the rate of change is increasing. It is complex and that is not a reason for inaction Actions Develop a National Information Management Strategy and Roadmap Principle #10 Comply With Our Statutory Requirements Business Driver We operate within a complex web of regulation that requires effective information management Actions Put appropriate governance in place to ensure that State, Federal and international requirements such as Sarbanes-Oxley are complied with.
